How Bruce Langworthy Beat Inflammation, Food Addiction, and Obesity with Carnivore
When Bruce Langworthy started his carnivore journey, he wasn’t chasing perfection—he was chasing relief. Relief from constant pain, from daily inflammation, from the emotional weight of anxiety and cravings, and quite literally from the 435 pounds he once carried.
In this candid conversation, Bruce opens up about his powerful transformation—physically, mentally, and emotionally—after adopting a carnivore way of eating. Now 54, he’s down 235 pounds, off ADD medications (including high-dose prescription methamphetamines), and living a life that once felt out of reach.
“I Just Ate When I Was Hungry”
What makes Bruce’s story so accessible is how uncomplicated it started. “Over time I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t really think I’m hungry for breakfast. Maybe I’ll just wait.’ And then that became, ‘Oh, well, I’ll just wait till lunch.’” Rather than aiming for a rigid eating schedule or calorie count, Bruce simply listened to his body.
“I’ve never experienced this with any other diet,” he says. “I don’t even concern myself with how many calories I eat. I just eat however much it takes to make me feel full—and I actually stop after that now.”
Food Freedom—Even with a Schedule
When asked how those with full-time jobs or shift work can follow a carnivore lifestyle, Bruce recommends keeping it simple and portable: “Hard-boiled eggs, bacon, some cheese—things you can eat cold and store easily. You don’t need to overcomplicate it.”
And he's right—many of us eat by the clock, not our hunger cues. “We’re conditioned to eat at certain times,” I shared, “but if you can step away from the clock and listen to your hunger, it changes everything.”
The Truth About Slip-Ups
Interestingly, Bruce doesn't consider his intentional “off-plan” meals as slip-ups. Instead, he treats them like lessons. “The first time I had a hoagie sandwich again, I regretted it almost immediately. The sugar cravings came roaring back, and the next day, my inflammation was off the charts.”
These brief detours serve as powerful reminders of why he stays committed to carnivore. “I was in that inflamed state constantly before—and never realized it was the food causing it.”
Loose Skin and Fasting Myths
One topic that especially concerns women is loose skin after weight loss. Bruce shared that after trying Atkins years ago and losing weight, he dealt with sagging skin. But this time, it’s different.
“I think eliminating seed oils made a huge improvement in my skin,” he says. “Plus, I naturally fell into intermittent fasting—eating between noon and 4pm most days. Over time, that helped a lot with skin tightening.”
And while some people on social media insist that you need a 72-hour fast to experience autophagy (the body’s cellular clean-up process), Bruce challenges that: “I didn’t need that level of fasting to see improvement. It’s not always about purity—it’s about consistency.”
What About Scientific Proof?
Bruce had an important message for those stuck on needing scientific evidence before trying carnivore: “I can't prove this diet works for everyone, but I am the evidence. My results speak for themselves.”
We agreed—unless you're locked in a lab for a year and monitored 24/7, most studies rely on “scout’s honor.” People often underreport their food intake (I used to lie to my doctor about alcohol!), and studies can’t always capture nuance or lived experience.
Goodbye to Cravings, ADD Meds, and Pain
Among Bruce’s most profound wins is getting off strong ADD medication and regaining mobility. “I was using a cane for years. I had handicapped parking. And now, I walk without it.” He attributes a lot of his previous pain and brain fog to high oxalate intake (from spinach-heavy smoothies and plant-based meals), which carnivore eliminated.
He also ditched alcohol—something that became easier once sugar cravings were gone. “It was one of the best side effects of carnivore,” he says.
