From Anorexia and Amputation to Healing Through Faith and Carnivore: Mary Ann Peters’ Story
When you meet Mary Ann Peters, you’re struck not by her scars, but by her strength. At just 33 years old, she’s lived through battles that would break most people—decades of anorexia, a life-threatening septic infection, amputations, and years of searching for answers in a medical system that didn’t always offer hope.
And yet, Mary Ann radiates light. Her story is one of resilience, faith, and the power of food as medicine.
A Lifetime of Struggle with Food
Mary Ann’s battle with anorexia began at 13. In a high-achieving home, she used food—or the lack of it—as a way to control what felt uncontrollable. That struggle carried into adulthood, morphing into cycles of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating.
Even when she discovered the carnivore diet in 2018—after being inspired by Dr. Ken Berry—her illness twisted the approach. Instead of true nourishment, she fell back into restriction, using carnivore as another way to deny herself food.
But her turning point would come in the most unexpected—and terrifying—way.
Surviving Sepsis and Amputation
In late 2022, a seemingly harmless gym hot tub visit changed everything. Mary Ann contracted a bacterial infection that quickly spiraled into sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body’s response to infection begins shutting down its own organs.
Within days, she was in the ICU. Her kidneys failed. Her body was overwhelmed with infection. Doctors fought to save her life, but the damage was devastating.
Mary Ann lost fingers, toes, and eventually, part of her leg below the knee.
Lying in that hospital bed, she realized just how close she had come to death. And it was there, at her lowest point, that she fully surrendered her life to Jesus.
“I realized I had been holding on to control,” she said. “I needed to let go. I needed to nourish my body, not destroy it.”
Finding Healing Through Faith and Carnivore
Recovery wasn’t just about surviving surgery—it was about rebuilding her relationship with food, her body, and her spirit.
For the first time in her life, Mary Ann began to view food as nourishment, not punishment. She embraced carnivore not as a tool of restriction, but as a way to fuel her healing body with the most nutrient-dense foods available.
Her meals today are simple:
-
Ground beef, roasts, and brisket
-
Chicken wings and steak
-
Eggs, butter, and nourishing animal fats
“I finally eat to satiety and stop,” she shared. “That alone is a miracle after years of obsession.”
For Mary Ann, carnivore offered a structure that freed her mind. Instead of endless choices and food noise, she had clarity—and with it, peace.
The Power of Community
One of the strongest themes in Mary Ann’s story is the role of community.
For years, eating disorders thrive in isolation. Shame, secrecy, and self-criticism kept her trapped. But in the carnivore community, she found something radically different: encouragement, accountability, and hope.
“It’s like we’ve found the secret code,” she said. “We reject the broken system together. And we want to build each other up.”
I felt the same transformation myself after attending the Steak and Butter Gang meetup in Montana—it was life-changing. Being surrounded by like-minded people who “get it” creates momentum and strength you simply can’t find alone.
That’s why I’m passionate about not just online connections, but also building in-person gatherings here in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Healing happens faster when we do it together.
Why Mary Ann’s Story Matters
Mary Ann’s journey is about more than carnivore. It’s about faith, surrender, and resilience.
It’s about choosing healing over control, nourishment over punishment, and community over isolation.
Her story is a reminder that:
-
Healing is not linear—it’s full of setbacks and new beginnings.
-
True change requires both inner transformation and outer support.
-
No matter how broken the past, there is always hope for the future.
