Morning Pages After 4 Years: The Unexpected Lessons, The Artist’s Way Changed My Life

4 Years of Morning Pages & The Artist’s Way: What I’ve Learned

Four years ago, I picked up The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and began the practice of Morning Pages—three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness writing every single morning. I thought it would be simple. Just journaling, right? But what I discovered was so much deeper.

I began sharing my journey and hoping to inspire others on my Insight Timer Page.

This daily ritual revealed resistance, tested my discipline, and ultimately transformed the way I see creativity and myself. Today, I want to share what I’ve learned—both the struggles and the breakthroughs.

The Resistance Is Real

When I first started Morning Pages, the resistance was strong. My mind would say: “You don’t have time for this. Who cares what you write? What’s the point?” Why won't 5 minutes suffice?

But the beauty of Morning Pages is that they don’t have to be profound. They’re a brain dump—a way of clearing the clutter so creativity can flow more freely. Over time, I realized the resistance was just my inner critic fighting for control. Writing anyway was an act of reclaiming my creative space.

By the way, if I only have 5 minutes, I still take the opportunity to do something!

The Power of Commitment

Four years in, I’ve learned that consistency matters more than perfection. Some days my Morning Pages are insightful. Other days they’re messy ramblings about laundry or errands. But showing up every day builds a quiet discipline that spills into other areas of life.

It’s like strength training for creativity—you might not see the results instantly, but over time, you grow stronger, freer, and more confident.

Artist Dates: More Than Just Fun

The Artist’s Way also introduced me to Artist Dates—solo adventures designed to nurture your inner child and refill your creative well. At first, I resisted these too. They felt frivolous, like I should be “productive” instead.

But when I leaned in—visiting a bookstore, walking through a gallery, even just exploring a thrift shop—I found they gave me fresh eyes. Creativity needs play, curiosity, and joy. Artist Dates helped me rediscover those things.

Redefining Creativity

Before The Artist’s Way, I thought creativity belonged only to artists, painters, musicians, or “naturally gifted” people. But now I know: creativity is simply how we approach life.

Cooking a meal, organizing a room, solving a problem, or planning a project—these are all creative acts. Morning Pages helped me see that creativity isn’t about being “good” at something. It’s about showing up, experimenting, and being willing to create.

Alternative Lives

One of my favorite exercises in The Artist’s Way was imagining my “alternative lives”—the careers or paths I never took but still daydream about. Maybe a travel writer. Maybe an archaeologist. Maybe a Broadway singer.

Even living in a different place, such as my Living at the Beach, which I once did, but no longer.

These aren’t regrets—they’re reminders that our creative spirit is vast. Even if we don’t pursue every path, we can still weave pieces of those dreams into our current life. Morning Pages became a safe space to dream without limits.

Final Thoughts: Why I Keep Going

Four years later, I’m still writing my Morning Pages. Not because every day is easy, but because they’ve become my anchor. They clear my head, open my heart, and remind me that creativity isn’t something to chase—it’s something we nurture daily.

If you’re feeling stuck creatively, resistant, or unsure of where to begin, I can say with certainty: Morning Pages are worth it.

👉 Whether you’ve been doing Morning Pages for years, or you’re just curious about The Artist’s Way, I hope this inspires you to commit to the process, embrace the resistance, and rediscover what creativity means to you.
